The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
You would think your fellow MUN-ers are all about being formal - white top black bottom dress code, but the delegates this year have come not only prepared for the debates in the upcoming four days, but have also come dressed in the latest fashion trends.
Amongst the sea of black pants and white shirts, the girls (thankfully) add a splash of color with their bright blouses and classy scarves. However, Raghad Aldughaiter, Delegate of the Czech Republic, GA 3, said she wore her scarf because she had to represent her country, Saudi Arabia, a country where women must cover their hair.
The fashion continues as high-waist pants and skirts emerge as dominant trends, which Rukmini Mahurkar (Interpol, Advisory Panel) describes as “put-together and more professional.” But kudos go to the female delegates who came wearing short skirts accompanied with tight stockings or black leggings, elegantly establishing their presence as they become the male delegates’ center of attention.
As for the male delegates, it wasn’t all just black and white. At every conference you get the more daring ones who come wearing multihued ties. One even wore a rainbow tie! And then we somehow – though unsurprisingly – have delegates from China who proudly and patriotically wear ties embedded with their country’s beloved animal – the panda – and another who wore a tie that had sewed onto it a collage of Chinese characters that again, not surprisingly, translate to “Never lose, always win”.
By comparison, it was quite easy to spot the fashion amateurs. Guys, remember the bottom of the blazer shouldn’t be done up! And girls, if you’re wearing short short skirts that reveal your bare legs, bend down with caution as you pick up your resolution, and of course, sit with your legs crossed please! If there is anything striking about the delegates’ fashion, it must be the sharp contrast between the conference’s theme color - purple craze - and the red long-sleeved shirts worn by male delegates that flood the committees! Delegates, don’t drown in this sea of Men (and Women) in Black. Be more audacious! Girls, put on those high, high heels, and boys…well, you guys don’t really have a choice.
